Amateur misanthrope James is haunted by Aunt Josie, a recently deceased professional misanthrope, after the rat priest Caesar and the fox lord Napoleon convince him to resurrect her. Armed with her ghoulish might to be the best miser he can be, he must ensure her ex-husband loses custody of their kids to keep their bargain alive. Similarly, Caesar demands that James repay him for his assistance by serving as his Rat God, and Napoleon demands similar, yet mutually exclusive, service as Lord of the House.
